When should you replace your skylights?

Most people have busy lives and never consider the state of their skylights until they notice a problem. Because skylights are located on the roof, you never see it up close. Skylights are a wonderful source of natural light in the home, but they are also a crucial component to your home’s waterproofing. When they fail, they leak. Sometimes when they leak, they cause major property damage.

How Long Will My Skylight Last?

Velux, the leading skylight manufacturer, offers a 10-year no leak
warranty.  They typically last much longer than 10 years, but eventually,
they breakdown.  Sure, you can caulk a skylight to buy you a little more
time, but this would only be a temporary repair.  Once a skylight has
failed, you need to replace it.  Unlike replacement windows and doors, a
skylight does not simply pop in and out of its opening.  You must weave
Skylights into the roof with a flashing kit.

Keep Old Skylights?

If you are considering keeping your old skylights during a full roof
replacement, you might want to reconsider.  An old skylight should ideally
be replaced.  New flashing kits sometimes do not fit old skylights.
Reusing old flashing with nail holes is sometimes the only option.
Just because your skylight does not leak currently, does not mean it will
survive a roof replacement even with the most delicate roofers.

Replace Skylights Later?

So, if you do decide to keep your old skylights with your new roof, the roof
will certainly outlast the skylight.  Replacing skylights will require
replacing the shingles around the skylight.  Shingle styles and colors are
always changing.  New shingles never match an old roof once they are exposed
to UV rays.  Replacing skylights on their own will cost much more in labor
and materials than it would as part of a roof replacement.  If you are
looking for cost-saving measures make sure to talk to your roofer to avoid
actions that will end up costing more in the long run.

What Are My Options?

There are times when you need to replace your skylight without the rest of
the roof.  Every situation and roof is different.  What is important
is that you understand the situation, so you can make an informed decision
about your home’s future.  If you have questions about the condition of
your roof or skylights, call Bayside Exteriors today.
